State Car Insurance Rates

The Most And Least Expensive States For Car Insurance
Louisiana residents pay a lot, Maine residents

According to an Insure.com study, Louisiana is number one -- in a very bad way. The Pelican State has the highest average insurance rates in the nation, beating out Michigan and Georgia to take the not-so-illustrious title for 2013.

On the flip side, Maine turned out to be the least expensive state for insurance rates, followed by Iowa and North Carolina.

$3,000 On Gas Last Year

Average U.S. Family Spent Nearly $3,000 On Gas Last Year

Even as cars become more fuel efficient, the cost of gasoline is still claiming a bigger percentage of the average American paycheck.

The average U.S. household spent $2,912 on gasoline in 2012, which amounts just less than 4 percent of their pre-tax income, according to research released Monday by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That's the highest percentage in three decades.

Dutch-based Studio Roosegaarde and infrastructure management group Heijmans have developed a new idea for a "Smart Highway" that will literally glow in the dark. In addition to its solar-energized illuminated line markings, it will incorporate temperature-sensitive weather indicators that become visible to warn of potential icy surface conditions.

OnStar FMV

OnStar FMV: Bringing OnStar To Non-GM Vehicles

You have seen or heard the ads. A woman is in an accident and OnStar knows because there airbags went off, and so the OnStar advisor asks the driver if she is okay while emergency medical teams are on the way.

OnStar, owned by General Motors, has in recent years just been available on GM cars. But in the last year, OnStar has been selling a new product--OnStar FMV, which allows a consumer to put OnStar into any car or truck, though it doesn't have all the services and gee-whiz features of OnStar in a GM vehicle.

Carbon-fiber bodies long have been used for Formula 1 race cars and supercars, such as the Mercedes SLR McLaren Roadster, and carbon-fiber components such as roofs and spoilers are not rare on sporty cars.
However, the i3 will be the first high-volume car using the technology, which is based on a material costing as much as E20/kg ($13/lb.).
